Definition of freedom
Freedom for us can mean freedom to act, to speak, and to live under a government that we have elected. A bird freed from its cage or a prisoner released from prison have also experienced a particular kind of freedom.
But is this the complete definition of freedom?
Yes, this can be the definition of political freedom. But there can be many other types of freedom such as moral or spiritual freedom. Are we morally and spiritually free even after so many years of gaining political independence? We should rejoice more in achieving complete freedom than only in external freedom. All of us are basically bound in the bondage of sin and we are not able to free ourselves from this bondage even if we want to because we are born sinners and sin is present in every aspect of our personality. The Bible tells us that God created man for His glory and fellowship. There was a time when man was in a pure and sweet fellowship with God and was not a slave to sin.
Still in bondage ?
But our first parents disobeyed God’s commandment thus losing that freedom and since then the entire human race is under the slavery of sin. The first parents chose to sin by abandoning the purpose of God’s creation, and as a result, the entire human race was cut off from the company of God and is now subject to sin.
The result of sin is not only physical death but also spiritual and eternal death. That is why man is spiritually dead and away from God today.
The way to true freedom
The Lord Jesus Christ laid down His life on the cross as an atonement for our sins and rose on the third day so that whoever believes in him will not perish but will have everlasting life. Those who take refuge in the Lord Jesus can receive and experience true and complete freedom in their lives.
