Dr. Rajkumar Ramachandran’s life is a testament to the transformative power of faith. From a childhood filled with questions about God to a life dedicated to sharing his love, his journey is one of seeking, finding, and living in the grace of Christ.
Early Life of Rajkumar Ramchandran
Rajkumar Ramachandran was born in Bombay into a middle-class Iyengar family. He was the youngest of five children and was pampered by his family. His parents blessed him with everything he needed, and he never felt like he lacked anything while growing up. At age 11, he developed a longing to know God more deeply, often going up to the terrace of his Chennai home to gaze at the stars and wonder who created them. Although his parents were religious and he prayed daily, he had an inner desire to truly know the God he prayed to.
As a youth, Rajkumar excelled in both sports and academics. He was a gifted cricket player and athlete, breaking records in college. He was also very popular in school and pursued a degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering at a top college, managing to get one of only 40 coveted seats. After graduating college, he got a job with Siemens in Bangalore in December 1974.
Encountering Jesus
After two years of working at Siemens, a colleague told Rajkumar that Jesus loved him and was his savior. Initially offended, Rajkumar decided to read the Bible himself to argue against his friend’s claim that Jesus was the only way to salvation. However, instead of finding evidence to prove his friend wrong, Rajkumar became fascinated by Jesus’ compassion, power and humility. After 14 months of reading Scripture, he committed his life fully to Christ on 25th May 1980, realizing that Lord Jesus Christ was indeed the savior of the world. Later, he got married to Ragini, who was also from a Hindu background.
Rajkumar recounted that for 27 years of his life, although he had attended Christian institutions, no one told him about Christ. After surrendering his life to Jesus, he felt compelled to share the good news with others. He began traveling extensively, speaking to crowds in over 48 countries about God’s love and grace throughout the next 38 years.
Life Calling and Ministry: Serving God
After Rajkumar converted to Christianity, he spent time alone with God, listening for His voice and guidance. He felt God speak to his spirit, asking what he would do now that he knew the truth about Jesus being the only way to the Father. Rajkumar told God he would go wherever God sent him and say whatever God put in his heart. This kicked off nearly four decades of evangelistic ministry to preach to crowds small and large across the globe.
Rajkumar recounted that early on in his ministry, God delivered him from a fear of dying. After an astrologer ominously warned that Rajkumar would soon die in an accident, Rajkumar cried out to Jesus for help in his fear. Peace instantly flooded his soul, and he knew God had heard his prayer.
Six months later, Rajkumar officially dedicated his life to full-time ministry. He told Jesus he wanted to make up for lost time after living 27 years, not knowing Christ. Rajkumar committed to continual study of Scripture in order to know God more intimately. He believes that as an unchanging God; it was easier to know God than fickle humans. Rajkumar affirmed that God’s promises became his inheritance and God faithfully encouraged him daily in his spirit.
Life Today
Now decades into his ministry career, Rajkumar says his life purpose is simply living wholeheartedly for Christ after spending so many years living for himself. He seeks to further God’s kingdom rather than pursuing worldly ambition. This brought concern from his family early on, as Rajkumar’s brothers achieved status and wealth in America while Rajkumar stayed in India. However, in time, Rajkumar had the joy of seeing his parents, brothers, wife and in-laws all come to accept Jesus Christ as well.
Rajkumar emphasizes that people go to heaven by grace, not through personal effort. He wants all to know the freedom, peace and encouragement that comes from calling on Jesus’ name. Rajkumar has experienced abundant life in Christ, busyness in ministry mixed with deep inner stillness. Now advanced in years, he continues his life’s mission of selflessly serving God and declaring Christ’s love wherever he goes.
Living for the Gospel of Christ and the Joy of Abundance
Today, Ramachandran is a beacon of faith, sharing his message of love and grace with the world. Thousands of people belonging to various backgrounds have come to know Christ through his preaching.
His life is a testament to the abundant joy and freedom found in knowing Christ. He encourages everyone to seek Him, to know Him, and to live for Him.
