Testimony of Uma Moorthy: From Brahmin Faith to Christian Grace

Uma Moorthy Testimony

In today’s blog post, we will share the testimony of Uma Moorthy’s heartfelt journey of faith. Born and raised in the vibrant city of Chennai, India, Uma shares her unique story of embracing Christianity.

Early Life as a Staunch Hindu

Uma reflects on her roots as the youngest daughter of four siblings. From a staunch Brahmin background, Uma’s devout practices as a Hindu were deeply ingrained. Temples were a regular part of her routine, and her forehead bore the marks of her faith – vermilion, saffron, and the sacred ashes known as Kumkum and vibhuti in Tamil. Uma’s commitment extended to daily readings of the Kanda Sashti Kavasam, a revered Hindu scripture.

Uma studied in Christian schools, and at one point, she got a small Bible through Gideons international. Uma found these pocket-sized Bibles fascinating because of their tiny size, fitting right into a pocket. Each day, she read the Psalms and Proverbs from the Bible, not for religious reasons, but simply because she found them interesting. She never paid attention to the gospel shared by her Christian friends. She was a stubborn Hindu in her faith.

Moment of Realization at a Christian Camp

In 1998, during her 12th standard, Uma attended a Scripture Union camp organized by her school. Opting for it as a fun excursion to Mahabalipuram, she joined the camp. On the third and final day, a sister delivered a message during a prayer group session, referencing Isaiah Chapter 44 from the Bible. The message emphasized how people cut wood from a tree, using part of it to create an idol for worship and the other part as firewood for cooking. What struck Uma was that the sister, not knowing that she was a Hindu, pointed specifically to her in front of everyone and said, “If you have brains, think and see.” This left Uma feeling upset, leading to a sleepless night. Driven by curiosity and a critical mind, she opened the Bible to explore whether the message held any truth.

Discovering Divine Truths

After reading through the Bible, Uma realized for the first that idol worship is a sin. And then she realized she could address God as “Father.” Uma learned that this God desired a personal relationship, coveting a covenant with those who sought Him. Most significantly, she grasped the concept of being born with sin and the notion that only the blood of Jesus Christ could purify one of all sins. The realization that the Lord sacrificed Himself on the cross for eternal life after death profoundly affected Uma.

Another remarkable revelation for Uma was the understanding that she could worship this God from any place, and in any condition—whether or not physically clean. Uma realized she could pray, worship, and establish a connection with God from any location—be it a church, home, or any space. This God didn’t demand rituals, sacrifices, or specific locations; all He desired was a sincere heart, having already made the ultimate sacrifice for humanity.

Accepting Christ and Facing Persecution

Uma accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior on that day and left idol worship. However, her journey didn’t end there. She faced persecution and was even forbidden from church and Bible activities. Undeterred, she found solace in prayer on terraces and in restrooms. Despite persecution from family, she got water baptized in 2005.

Educational Success and Family Blessings:

The Lord guided her through academic success, despite personal challenges like a tongue-tie condition. She excelled in studies, became a lecturer, and eventually became an assistant professor at a leading engineering college.

Marriage and Parent’s conversion

As the time for marriage approached, her parents wanted her to marry one of the rich Iyer bridegrooms. But Uma told them she was baptized as a Christian and could not marry a non-believer. Her parents did not understand baptism and were upset. The family was devastated and her mother cried. Uma had to explain baptism and her Christian faith to them. Before, they thought it was childish talk. But now they realized it was serious. Her parents were shocked, and the family cried together. Eventually, Uma’s parents prayed to Jesus for her sake and the Lord changed their hearts. Uma asked why her parents should suffer for her and cried to the Lord. Uma later realized that her parents were slowly coming to the Lord Jesus – they prayed to Jesus and started believing in Him.

And when they all started praying, the Lord opened up a door according to her parents’ desire to get married to a Brahmin convert just like her. The Lord showed a bridegroom and after many confirmations from the Lord; she got married to Mr. Krishna Moorthy (Daniel). They had a Biblical wedding, testifying Christ to all relatives.

God blessed Uma and her husband with two baby boys, Isaac and John, to raise as warriors for Christ.

Being Used by God Despite Flaws

Though Uma was flawed with a speech impediment, God now uses her to sing and share the gospel in India and abroad. Through revelations and prayer, the Lord directed her towards ministry and singing. Overcoming personal flaws, she embraced singing in Tamil and English, using her voice to glorify God. She says, “This unexpected journey from a Brahmin background to ministry and singing is a testament to God’s transformative power”.

Final Message of Salvation

Uma’s message is that salvation is from the Lord. No one can force faith on you. If you accept Jesus, He will change you and bless you eternally. Open your heart, accept Him today!

Uma’s story once again reminds us that salvation is the Lord’s work. No human effort can convert another; it is the Lord who chooses and transforms hearts.

Her journey from a staunch Brahmana to a follower of Christ is a testament to the Lord’s grace, love, and redemptive power. May this powerful testimony inspire others to seek the truth, accept the Lord Jesus, and experience His transformative grace in their lives.
