Walking with God Bible verses

What does it mean to walk with God?

In this article, we will explore several Bible verses about walking with God and discuss the significance of this spiritual journey.

An obvious question that may come to our mind is – “How can man walk with God who is a Spirit?” The expression doesn’t mean physically walking with God. Walking with God means to walk in the light of the Lord your God and walk in His ways.

Walk in the Light

In 1 John 1:7, it says, “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
This shows us that God prepared a way for us to walk in all His ways through Jesus, His Son, who loved us and gave Himself up for us, for our sins as an offering and sacrifice to God.

Walk in His ways

Psalm 128:1 “Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways!”
It is about having a deep fellowship with God and that all our words, actions, thoughts and desires will be pleasing to Him.

Walk in a manner worthy of the calling

Apostle Paul says in Ephesians 4:1, “As a prisoner in the Lord, then, I urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling you have received. ”
The Bible teaches us in the book of Genesis that God walked in the garden of Eden with Adam and Eve until they fall in sin. The Bible also says that Jesus, God’s Son, came to this earth to restore our relationship with God and He cleanses us from all sin, so that we shall walk in all His ways.

Walking in Good works

Ephesians 2:10 “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.”

Bible verses about how Enoch walked with God

Genesis 5:22 – “Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters.”

Genesis 5:24 – “Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him.”

Hebrews 11:5 – “By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death: ‘He could not be found, because God had taken him away.’ For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.”

These verses highlight Enoch’s close relationship with God and his extraordinary fate of being taken by God without experiencing death. Hebrews 11:5 highlights the meaning of “walking with God”. It clearly says that Enoch was commended as one who pleased God.

Noah walked with God

Genesis 6:9 – “This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God.”

God commands Abraham to walk before Him

Genesis 17:1,2 – “When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, ‘I am God Almighty. Walk before Me and be blameless. 2 I will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly…”

Abraham’s confidence in God, before whom he walked

Genesis 24:40 – “He replied, ‘The LORD, before whom I have walked, will send His angel with you and make your journey a success, so that you can take a wife for my son from my clan and from my father’s house.’”

This verse is a part of the narrative where Abraham’s servant is sent to find a wife for Isaac. In this verse, the servant is speaking to Laban and Bethuel, explaining that when he had expressed doubt about the success of finding a wife for Isaac, Abraham had said that the Lord before whom he has walked, will send His angel with him to make the journey a success, enabling him to find a wife for Isaac from Abraham’s clan and his father’s house.

This verse reflects Abraham’s confidence in the LORD before whom he walked, to guide and bless the journey, ensuring that they find a suitable wife for Isaac.

God desires that man should walk with Him

Micah 6:8 – “He has shown you, O mankind, what is good? And what does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

Genesis 48:15 – “Then he blessed Joseph and said: ‘The God before whom my fathers Abraham and Isaac walked, the God who has been my shepherd all my life to this day,’”

Leviticus 26:12 – “And I will walk among you and be your God, and you will be My people.”

2 Corinthians 6:16 – “What agreement can exist between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: ‘I will dwell with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be My people.’”

A spiritual leader’s walk with the Lord

Malachi 2:6 – “True instruction was in his mouth, and nothing false was found on his lips. He walked with Me in peace and uprightness, and he turned many from iniquity.”

The context of this verse is a passage that addresses the behavior and responsibilities of the priests. It emphasizes the importance of the priests’ role in teaching and guiding the people in the ways of God.

This verse serves as a reminder of the significance of spiritual leaders walking with God, leading a life of integrity, teaching truth, and influencing others positively. It underscores the impact of one’s actions and words on guiding others towards righteousness and away from iniquity.

Walk by faith

2 Corinthians 5:7-9 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, then, and would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So we aspire to please Him, whether we are here in this body or away from it.

Walking with God also means walking by faith and not by sight. So, apostle Paul highlights that his chief ambition in life is to please God.

These verses highlight the importance of walking with God in our daily lives. We also saw the close relationship between individuals and God, emphasizing their righteousness and faithfulness in walking with God.
