The Nobel Peace Prize
The Nobel Peace Prize was established in 1895 by the will of Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel. According to Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize shall be awarded to the person who in the preceding year “shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses”. Though the award is presented every year, there have been 19 occasions wherein the awards were retained. This was mainly because the award committee could not find any person or work that fit the above definition.
What is true peace ?
Peace is the most sought after thing in today’s world. Be it nations, families, or individuals, rich or poor, everyone is in the pursuit of peace. But everyone who seeks peace is not getting it.
What indeed is peace ? On a personal level, peace indicates a relaxed state of mind that is not disturbed by any internal or external circumstances that one faces. Jawaharlal Nehru once said, “Peace is not a relationship of nations. It is a condition of mind brought about by a serenity of soul. Peace is not merely the absence of war. It is also a state of mind. Lasting peace can come only to peaceful people.”
How can I become a peaceful person ?
But how can I become a peaceful person? Can I obtain it from somewhere? Albert Einstein said “Peace cannot be kept by force. It can only be achieved by understanding.”
Has anyone succeeded in bringing peace to the world ?
Yes, it is none other than the Lord Jesus Christ. During the course of His life on Earth, He provided true peace to those with troubled minds. When He left this world, He left behind His peace for us.
Jesus said, “I have told these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart ! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33
Jesus also said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27
How can you experience this true peace that Jesus offers ? It is simple. Come to Jesus, confess your sins, and accept Him as your Lord and Saviour. Then, “the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:7
